Conform datelor recensămîntului din anul 2004, populaţia satului constituia 1571 de oameni. Satul Covurlui a fost menționat documentar în anul 1552.

Astăzi se împlinesc 85 de ani de la nașterea interpretului de muzică populară și ușoară Ion Bass. S-a născut 25 iunie 1933 în satul Chirsova, raionul Comrat.
Între anii 1957-1961 – învață la colegiul de muzica „Ștefan Neaga” din Chișinău, clasa canto și dirijat coral.
În perioada 1961-1974 Ion Bass este solist al Filarmonicii din Chișinău, iar în anii 1974-1987 − în cadrul orchestrei de muzica populară „Folclor”.
Din 1992 este profesor la Colegiul de Muzica „Ștefan Neaga” de la Chișinău.
A înregistrat la Radio Chișinău cîntece de Ș. Aranov, S. Șapiro, C. Rusnac, V. Rotaru, Z. Tcaci, V. Verhola, Gh. Mustea ș. a. Repertoriul său include și diferite prelucrări ale melodiilor populare gagauzești și moldovenești.
În 1967 lui Ion Bass i s-a conferit titlul onorific Artist Emerit din Republica Moldova; iar în 1989 – Artist al poporului din Republica Moldova.
